* Students are expected to be in class, in uniform, belt tied properly, at the start of class. (They can arrive early and get help with their belts if necessary; there are also instructions for belt tying on the web site.)
* Students line up by rank (white, yellow, green, blue, red, black), and students without uniforms are considered the lowest rank (regardless of their actual rank). Many new students wait a few weeks before purchasing a uniform; that is fine. The students line up this way regardless of the reason they do not have a uniform. (We teach that it is their responsibility to care for their uniform, including remembering to bring it and washing it themselves or asking a parent for help.)
* Students are expected to leave toys, gum, candy, soda, etc. at home. Students are normally given a water break during class, and may drink water at that time. Students are not to drink soda, juice, etc. during this break; these drinks can actually increase dehydration. Also, eating is not allowed during class. (Gatorade or other sports drinks are allowed.)
* Students are expected to participate fully in class. They are not allowed to ”sit out or skip a drill or game unless they bring a signed note from a parent or receive the instructor's permission. Everyone has parts of class they love and parts they dislike, but everyone is required to take part in everything. Participating in the entire class builds perseverance.
* Students are expected to demonstrate courtesy to everyone in the class. We address each other as ”Mr. ___„, ”Ms. ___„, ”Sir" or ”Ma'am". We do not allow name-calling, yelling, or fighting.
* Students are expected to practice at home three times each week, for a period of time equal to the number of years in their age. (For example, a seven-year-old should practice seven minutes a day, three days a week). Ideas for what to practice are available on the web site under Testing Requirements. Students are NOT allowed to practice on siblings or friends (unless they are also in our class). PLEASE NOTE: ALL practice should be done under parental supervision.
* Students are expected to let the instructor know when they will be missing class. A phone call to one of the senior instructors: Mr. Paar (507-934-2183) or Ms. Larson (507-931-5574) is greatly appreciated if at all possible.
* Students are expected to become familiar with the ”required knowledge" for their belt rank. This is posted on the web site under the Testing Requirements. Though most of it IS covered in class, students should still visit the web site to review their required knowledge. This is especially important just prior to testing.
Students who reach the rank of green belt should join the United States Taekwon-Do Federation (USTF). (Lower ranking students may also join.) The USTF is our school's governing body and maintains standards for techniques and testings; trains instructors; endorses tournaments; publishes manuals for testing, tournament rules, step sparring, and patterns; issues black belt certification; and promotes the art of taekwon-do. More information is available on our United States Taekwon-Do Federation page. Students may join the USTF by speaking with their instructor.
Students will test for rank when the instructor feels they are ready. Testing requirements for each rank are available on the web site. Some students learn rapidly and test quickly; others may need more time to prepare. Testings are seldom held more often than once per session. Students who do not pass a test will be given specific areas for improvement and will be able to demonstrate improvement in those areas for the instructor at any time.
* Students should purchase a uniform as soon as possible. (Students will not be allowed to test without one.) They should make it their personal responsibility to keep track of their uniform and wear it to class. NOTE: The belts are NOT intended to be washed, especially the colored belts. If your uniform has a front Velcro closure, the uniform will last longer if it is put on and taken off over the head like a shirt because fastening and unfastening the Velcro wears it out very quickly. Also, if the student's pants are long enough to be a tripping hazard, please hem them or be sure they are rolled up before class.
* Students do not wear shoes, socks, hats, or jewelry in class. If a student has a medical need, e.g. foot injury or medical alert bracelet, the student's parent should speak to the instructor.
When students test for rank the first time, they will receive an American flag patch. The flag goes on the left sleeve below the shoulder seam. Students who join the USTF will be given a USTF and ITF (International Taekwon-Do Federation) patch. The ITF patch goes on the left breast and the USTF goes on the right. No other patches may be worn without explicit permission from the instructor.
* Taekwon-Do is not just contact sport, but also a powerful self-defense weapon. Students are taught that Taekwon-Do is a weapon, and that it is not for ”playing around". Our rules exist not only to help students get the most out of class, but also for safety. Consequences for breaking the rules is typically push-ups. In more serious cases, a student may be placed in a "time out". If the latter happens frequently, a parent or guardian will be *required* to stay and watch classes until the student's behavior improves. Parents with concerns should speak to an instructor.
We believe that the study of martial arts is a team effort between the instructor and the student. We believe that having clearly defined expectations and responsibilities will help us all work together to make this a very positive experience for our students! Below is the list of responsibilities we feel each of us must accept to make our relationship successful.
